Which books do you intend to read this summer?

I am currently reading To See the Dream by Jessamyn West, my favorite American author. I love her novels, but this book is a memoir about her experiences in Hollywood as a screenwriter. She’s a tremendously talented writer who has been nearly completely forgotten, even in America. I will then read Stranger in a Strange Land, a biography of Gershom Scholem, one of my heroes. Scholem was a German-Jewish scholar who almost singlehandedly revived scholarly interest in Jewish mysticism (kabbalah). After that, I intend to read The Evolution of Beauty by Richard Prum. It’s about how evolution is not only driven by natural selection but also by the desire of female animals to have beautiful mates. Prum uses the evolution of birds to explain and defend his arguments, and since I’m particularly interested and devoted to birds, it’s a perfect book for me.

Name three books you’d recommend?

I would highly recommend Major Trends in Jewish Mysticism, Gershom Scholem’s most famous work. It revived an interest in Jewish Mysticism that had been largely lost, even amongst Jewish scholars. It also made kabbalistic ideas and traditions accessible to non-scholars like me. Scholem’s works have greatly influenced my writing, especially the novels in my Sephardic Cycle, which explores the lives of a Portuguese-Jewish family, the Zarcos. In Portuguese, the title of this book is, As Grandes Correntes da Mística Judaica.
For those who read in English, I would also highly recommend Jessamyn West’s novel, The Friendly Persuasion. It is a moving and beautiful book, and she is a great writer. I’d love to see it translated into Portuguese. Curiously, it was her only novel that was made into a film. It stars Gary Cooper. I’ve never seen it.
Lastly, I regard The Golden Ass as a masteripiece. It is the only ancient Roman novel to survive in its entirety. It is about a young man accidently turned into an ass by a witch’s spell that is uttered incorrectly by a friend. I regard it as the first book defending animal rights. Because of that, I sent a copy a few years ago to my old friend Peter Singer. He’s probably the most famous defender of animal rights in the world. Peter adored it and put out his own recent edition. I would recommend the translation by Robert Graves, however. For those who read in Portuguese, the titles for the book that I’ve found are O Asno de Ouro and As Metamorfoses.

De momento, estou a ler To See the Dream, de Jessamyn West, a minha autora americana preferida. Adoro os romances dela, mas este livro é um livro de memórias sobre as suas experiências em Hollywood enquanto argumentista. É uma escritora de enorme talento que caiu quase completamente no esquecimento, mesmo nos Estados Unidos. Depois, vou ler Stranger in a Strange Land, uma biografia de Gershom Scholem, um dos meus heróis. Scholem foi um estudioso judeu-alemão que, praticamente sozinho, reavivou o interesse académico pelo misticismo judaico (cabala). Depois disso, pretendo ler The Evolution of Beauty, de Richard Prum. Trata-se de como a evolução não é impulsionada apenas pela seleção natural, mas também pelo desejo das fêmeas de terem parceiros bonitos. Prum usa a evolução das aves para explicar e defender os seus argumentos e, como tenho um interesse e uma dedicação particulares pelas aves, é um livro perfeito para mim.

Recomende três livros a outros leitores (e diga-nos porquê).

Recomendo vivamente Major Trends in Jewish Mysticism, a obra mais famosa de Gershom Scholem. O livro reavivou um interesse pelo misticismo judaico que se tinha perdido em grande parte, mesmo entre os estudiosos judeus. Também tornou as ideias e tradições cabalísticas acessíveis a não-estudiosos como eu. As obras de Scholem influenciaram profundamente a minha escrita, especialmente os romances do meu Ciclo Sefardita, que explora a vida de gerações diferentes de uma família judaico-portuguesa, os Zarco. Em português, o título deste livro é As Grandes Correntes da Mística Judaica.
Para quem lê em inglês, recomendo vivamente o romance de Jessamyn West, The Friendly Persuasion. É um livro comovente e belo, e ela é uma excelente escritora. Adoraria vê-lo traduzido para português. Curiosamente, foi o único romance dela que foi adaptado para o cinema. É protagonizado por Gary Cooper. Nunca o vi.
Por último, considero O Asno de Ouro uma obra-prima. É o único romance Romano antigo que sobreviveu na íntegra. É sobre um jovem que acidentalmente se transforma num burro devido a um feitiço de bruxa que é pronunciado incorretamente. Considero-o o primeiro livro a defender os direitos dos animais. Por isso, enviei um exemplar há alguns anos ao meu velho amigo Peter Singer. Ele é provavelmente o mais famoso defensor dos direitos dos animais do mundo. O Peter adorou-o e lançou uma nova edição. No entanto, recomendo a tradução de Robert Graves. Espero que a tradução portuguesa seja também muito boa.
